Urenco USA Announces Milestones In Bid To Help End Reliance For Enriched Uranium On Russia
- Urenco USA announced two major milestones at its New Mexico enrichment facility: the first-ever production of Low-Enriched Uranium Plus (LEU+) above 5% U-235 and the commissioning of a new cascade of centrifuges.
- These achievements are part of a broader U.S. strategy to secure domestic nuclear fuel supplies and reduce dependence on Russian enriched uranium, which has historically been a dominant source for American utilities.
- By expanding capacity and diversifying enrichment levels, Urenco USA is positioning itself as a critical contributor to energy security and the transition toward advanced nuclear reactors that require higher-assay fuels.
Three Illinois reactors receive licence extensions
- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has granted a 20-year licence extension for Constellation’s Clinton unit 1 and subsequent 20-year renewals for Dresden units 2 and 3.
- These reactors, originally connected to the grid between 1970 and 1987, will now be able to operate until 2047–2051, supported by more than USD 370 million in upgrades to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency.
- The extensions will help preserve over 2,200 jobs and generate USD 8.1 billion in tax revenues, while ensuring clean, carbon-free electricity for nearly 10 million homes over the next two decades.
두산에너빌, SMR 전용공장 … 年 20기 생산 목표로 구축
- 두산에너빌리티는 AI 등 첨단 산업의 전력 수요 증가에 대응하기 위해 소형모듈원전(SMR) 전용 생산 설비 구축에 나섰다.
- 회사는 총 8068억 원을 투자해 신공장 건설, 기존 공장 최적화, 혁신 제조 시설을 추진하며내년 3월부터 2031년 6월까지 설비 정비를 진행할 예정이다.
- 이를 통해 연간 20기 수준의 SMR 제작 능력을 확보하게 되며, 현재는 창원 공장 생산라인을활용해 연간 12대 분량을 생산할 수 있다.
