DOE makes first pick for advanced fuel pilot project
- Standard Nuclear has been announced as the first US company to be conditionally accepted into the Department of Energy's programme to establish a domestic nuclear fuel supply chain for testing new reactors.
- Standard Nuclear has been selected to "expand, build, and operate advanced fuel fabrication facilities for TRISO fuels in both Tennessee and Idaho", according to information from the DOE.
- High-assay low-enriched uranium TRISO fuels are the preferred fuel in several advanced reactor designs currently under development.
The nuclear outlook on the Big Beautiful Bill
- The dust has settled: It’s been one month since President Trump signed H.R.1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, after a lengthy and contentious reconciliation process.
- While the FEOC restrictions laid out in H.R.1 are complicated in scope, they are generally intended to reduce U.S. energy reliance on adversaries while simultaneously making those adversaries unable to take advantage of IRA credits.
- Industry response: Still, many in the nuclear industry have seen the preservation of these credits as a massive win in line with the broader groundswell in support from state and federal governments for nuclear.
