Hiroshima anniversary: mayor says Ukraine and Middle East crises show world ignoring nuclear ‘tragedies’
- The mayor of Hiroshima has led calls for the world’s most powerful countries to abandon nuclear deterrence, at a ceremony to mark 80 years since the city was destroyed by an American atomic bomb.
- Just under 100,000 survivors are still alive, according to recent data from the health ministry, with an average age of just over 86.
- Three days after the devastation in Hiroshima, the US dropped a plutonium bomb on the city of Nagasaki, killing 74,000 people. While the debate continues over whether the attacks were morally and militarily justified, many Americans continue to believe they forced Japan’s surrender on 15 August.
NASA plans lunar nuclear reactor by 2030 amid U.S.-China competition
- NASA has revealed plans to install a small reactor on the Moon by 2030 and to actively pursue a private space station to replace the International Space Station (ISS).
- This is interpreted as part of a strategy to establish a base where humans can stay long-term on the Moon, though there are analyses suggesting it arose from concerns that China and Russia could set up a base on the Moon with a reactor and establish restricted zones
- The United States has resumed manned lunar exploration, which had been paused since Apollo 17 in 1972, through the Artemis program.
- The Artemis Accords, signed in 2020, stipulate that certain areas for installations or assets on the lunar surface can be designated as "safety zones.“
- The United States is concerned that China and Russia may take similar measures.
고리 원전 4호기 오늘 운영 종료…계속 운전 심사
- 고리 원전 4호기가 6일 설계수명 40년이 종료돼 가동을 멈춘다.
- 운영 기간에도 꾸준히 설비 개선 등을 통해 전력 생산 기능에는 이상이 없지만 당초 설계에명시된 운영 기한 40년이 다 된 만큼 일단 가동 중지가 결정됐다.
- 정부와 한수원은 4호기를 향후 10년 동안 계속 운영하고자 원안위의 승인 심사를 받고 있다.
