White House unveils sweeping AI action plan to remake grid
- The White House released a sweeping action plan to boost development of artificial intelligence, a move that could influence the build-out of the grid and the electricity mix for decades.
- The plan outlines 90 policy actions that dozens of federal agencies should take to cut regulations, help construct data centers and boost the workforce to build out AI infrastructure. It also calls on holding back funding for states that hinder AI development and directs the Department of Commerce to eliminate climate change from its “risk management” AI framework, among other suggestions.
- Trump and Energy Secretary Chris Wright have said development of AI is critical to ensure that China does not dominate the technology. The administration is pushing for development of new technologies such as small modular reactors and fusion to be part of the power mix, partly to help support AI.
NRC Approval Paves Way For Historic Restart Of Palisades Nuclear Plant
- The Palisades nuclear station in the US stat of Michigan has made history after the NRC approved a licensing package that paves the way for the plant to load fuel and resume power operations. The approval makes Palisades, the first nuclear plant in the country to move from decommissioning status back to an operating licence.
- The plant’s owner, Florida-based Holtec International, said the licensing means Palisades can start bringing in fuel and officially get operators back on shift.
- “While these NRC approvals will allow Holtec to load fuel, there are still several licensing actions under NRC review and additional requirements that need to be met before the plant can start up under the original operating licence, which would expire March 24, 2031,” the NRC said.
고준위 특별법 시행령 공청회, 주민 반발 예고…30일 경주서 개최
- 고준위 방사성폐기물 관리 특별법 시행령 제정을 위한 경주 지역 공청회가 7월 30일 열릴 예정.
- 경주는 「중·저준위 방사성폐기물 관리 특별법과 원자력안전법에 따라 고준위 방사성폐기물의최종처분장 또는 중간저장시설 부지는 될 수 없음에도, 국내에서 유일하게 건식 고준위핵폐기물 저장시설을 운영하고 있는 지역이며, 월성 2~4호기 원자로가 현재 운영 연장을 추진 중.
- 고준위핵폐기물 저장공간 확보없이는 수명 연장이 사실상 불가능하다는 점에서, 맥스터 추가 건설은 불가피하다는 점에서 전문가들은 우려의 목소리를 내고 있음.
- 추가 시설 건설을 둘러싼 주민과 정부 간의 갈등은 더욱 심화될 것으로 예상.
