Bahrain signs a nuclear collaboration MOU with the U.S.
- Less than a week after news broke of the U.S. entering into civil nuclear talks with Malaysia, the U.S. State Department announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani have also signed a memorandum of understanding concerning civil nuclear cooperation.
- Assuming U.S.-Malaysia talks are successful and that country becomes the 51st to enter into a 123 Agreement, Bahrain will become the 52nd.
There Are Now 127 Different SMR Designs, Finds NEA Report
- The latest edition of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s Small Modular Reactor Dashboard reports growing interest around the world with 51 SMR designs involved in pre-licensing or licensing processes and 85 active discussions between SMR developers and site owners.
- The NEA SMR Dashboard identifies 127 SMR designs, which is up from 98 in its previous edition. It also reports that since that 2024 edition there has been an 81% increase in the number of SMR designs to have secured at least one source of funding, or funding commitment.
- For the new report, 74 of the 127 designs identified were analysed. Of the other 53 designs, 25 asked not to be included in this year’s edition, with the other ones including SMR designs not under active development or cancelled or paused.
“월성1호기, 10년 이상 재가동시 경제성 충분”…한수원, 포스코에 1·2호기 묶어 매각 추진
- 월성1호기의 민간 인수 가능성이 수면 위로 떠오르면서, 원전업계 내부에서도 “기술적 조건과장기 운전 시나리오를 감안하면 재가동의 경제성은 충분하다"는 평가가 나오고 있음.
- 월성1호기는 이미 과거 수명 연장 과정에서 주요 설비 정비를 마쳐, 현재 상태는 2·3·4호기보다 더 양호하다는 게 업계의 공통된 분석.
- 이에 최근 포스코가 월성1호기를 포함한 자체 원전 인수 및 운영 구상에 착수하면서 한수원에 월성1호기를 포함한 원전 일부의 운영권을 인수하고, 관련 법제도 정비도 병행하겠다는 입장을 밝힌 것으로 전해짐.
- 한수원 측은 1호기 단독보다는 1·2호기를 묶어서 매각하는 방식이 바람직하다는 입장이라고. 포스코는 정부·국회와의 법 개정 협의, 보안·안전 요건 충족, 기술인력 확보 등 전방위 검토에들어간 것으로 알려짐.
