US approves NuScale's bigger nuclear reactor design
- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Thursday approved NuScale Power's design for 77 megawatt reactors, clearing a hurdle for the company as it seeks to be the first company to build a U.S. small modular reactor.
- John Hopkins, NuScale's president and chief executive, said Thursday's approval, which came two months earlier than had been expected, allows the company to construct and operate a plant.
- Hopkins said the company could have an SMR in operation by the end of the decade if a customer moves quickly. "It's really in the customer's hands."
Texas Takes Bold Step With $350 Million Fund For Nuclear Power Development
- The US state of Texas is on track to create a taxpayer-funded incentive fund to pay for the development of nuclear power and the potential deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) after a critical vote in the Senate on 27 May.
- The Senate passed a legislative proposal that will dedicate an estimated $350m (€310m) of public money to pay for the nuclear power in Texas.
- Roughly 80% of the fund’s $350m would be dedicated towards reimbursing construction costs for nuclear reactors. The remainder would be used for research and development.

- 한국수력원자력이 우간다 신규 원전 용지 평가 용역을 따내면서 아프리카 원전 수출에 첫 단추를 끼웠다. 한수원은 한국형 원전(APR1400) 4기의 용지 배치를 함께 제안해 원전 수출을 위한 초석을 놓겠다는 계획이다.
- 28일 한수원은 “전날(현지 시간) 아프리카 우간다 엔베테에서 우간다와 신규 원전 용지 평가 용역 계약을 체결했다”라고 밝혔다. 우간다 에너지부가 발주한 이번 용역은 우간다 신규 원전 건설 후보지 중 하나인 부욘데 지역의 용지에 원자력발전소 건설이 적합한지를 평가하는 용역이다. 계약 기간은 26개월로, 이달부터 2027년 7월까지 진행된다.
