Trump sets out aim to quadruple US nuclear capacity
- US President Donald Trump has signed a series of executive orders titled Reinvigorating the Nuclear Industrial Base, Reforming Nuclear Reactor Testing at the Department of Energy and Ordering the Reform of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission with the goal of "re-establishing the United States as the global leader in nuclear energy".
- The aim is to increase US nuclear energy capacity from 100GW to 400GW by 2050, including the Department of Energy (DOE) prioritising work "with the nuclear energy industry to facilitate 5 gigawatt of power uprates to existing nuclear reactors and have 10 new large reactors with complete designs under construction by 2030".
Finnish regulator on track for repository decision by year-end
- Finland's Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority has said it remains on track to complete its assessment of Posiva Oy's operating licence application for the world's first used nuclear fuel repository despite deficiencies in the materials submitted for review.
- Radioactive waste management company Posiva submitted its application, together with related information, to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on 30 December 2021 for an operating licence for the used fuel encapsulation plant and final disposal facility currently under construction at Olkiluoto. The repository is expected to begin operations in the mid-2020s.
트럼프가 아쉬운 조선·원전, 우리 손에 다 있다.
- 트럼프 미국 대통령이 “이제는 원자력 시대”라고 선언하고 원전을 향후 25년간 4배로 늘리겠다고 발표했다. 원전 관련 규제를 완화하는 내용의 4개 행정명령에도 서명했다. 원전 건립에 속도를 내 신규 원전을 18개월 내로 허가하겠다고도 한다.
- 미·중 패권 경쟁에서 우위를 이어 나가기 위해 트럼프가 가장 관심 갖는 분야가 조선·원전 산업이다. 그런데 그 산업에서 미국은 경쟁력을 현저히 잃었고 우리나라가 세계적인 경쟁력을 갖고 있다. 트럼프의 관세 전쟁에 일방적으로 휘둘리지 말고 이 두 산업을 지렛대 삼아 트럼프에게 협상력을 발휘하고 신뢰도 구축해서 우리의 안보·경제적 이익을 극대화할 수 있어야 한다. 새 정부가 최우선으로 주력해야 할 일이다.
