Trump’s Executive Orders And What They Mean For The Nuclear Industry
- The four executive orders signed by US president Donald Trump on 23 May show commitment to a policy outlook on nuclear energy that has remained relatively consistent for nearly a decade – with a few key breaks from precedent, especially in plans to encourage commercial nuclear fuel recycling and decrease the independence of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
- “In the new orders, the Trump administration has articulated ambitious goals for rapid deployment of next-generation nuclear technologies; however, reducing personnel and funding for the NRC and the Department of Energy, along with weakening the NRC’s independence and global credibility, will make it challenging to realise the full potential of the US nuclear energy industry.”
Taiwan Sets Date For Referendum On Restart Of Maanshan-2 Nuclear Power Plant
- Taiwan will hold a national referendum on restarting a nuclear power plant that it shut down earlier this month, potentially opening up a path to reversing the government’s nuclear phaseout policy.
- The referendum, to be held on 23 August, will decide whether the Maanshan-2 nuclear power plant should resume operations, according to a statement from Taiwan’s Central Election Commission.

- 미국이 원자력 발전소 건립을 통해 미국의 원자력 발전 용량을 2050년까지 4배로 늘리겠다고밝혔다. 덴마크, 이탈리아, 벨기에, 스웨덴 등 유럽 나라들이 탈원전 정책을 폐기하는 가운데미국도 ‘원전 강국 재건’에 시동을 걸기 시작한 것이다. 원자력 발전에 대한 세계 각국의 관심이 커지면서 원전 수출시장에서 한국이 수혜를 볼 것이라는 기대감도 나온다.
- 미국 주간지 블룸버그 비즈니스위크도 같은 이유로 15일 "원전 수출에선 비교적 신흥국인 한국이 수익성 좋은 기회를 잡을 수 있는 위치에 있다"라고 평가했다. 블룸버그 비즈니스위크가전 세계에서 계획, 제안된 원전 사업 400여 건을 분석한 결과 한국이 이 중 43%를 수주할 수 있는 위치에 있으며 이를 통해 향후 10년간 최대 원전 기술 수출국 중 하나로 발돋움할 가능성이 있다고 했다.
