Restart of Kashiwazaki-Kariwa reactors approved by regional assembly
- The Niigata Prefectural Assembly has formally approved Governor Hideyo Hanazumi’s decision to restart Units 6 and 7 of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, marking the completion of the local consent process.
- This plant, operated by TEPCO and known as the largest nuclear facility in the world, has been shut down since the Fukushima disaster in 2011, despite being physically unaffected, and its restart is seen as a major milestone in Japan’s nuclear revival.
- While the move is expected to strengthen Japan’s energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, it has also sparked protests and concerns among residents who remain wary of nuclear safety and TEPCO’s past record.
China launches HTGR industrial alliance
- China has launched the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) Industrial Alliance in Beijing, bringing together over 60 organizations across research, design, fuel, and construction.
- The alliance aims to accelerate commercialization of HTGR technology for electricity, industrial heating, and hydrogen production, supporting China’s carbon neutrality goals.
- This marks a milestone after the success of the Shidao Bay HTR-PM, positioning China as a global leader in advanced nuclear innovation.
