Holtec cancels plans for New Mexico interim storage facility
- Holtec International has cancelled its plans to build the HI-STORE Consolidated Interim Storage Facility in New Mexico, citing legal setbacks and a lack of viable regulatory pathways, despite previously receiving a license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2023.
- The decision was made jointly with the Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance (ELEA), which had partnered with Holtec since 2015 to develop the facility using Holtec’s HI-STORM UMAX dry storage system for used nuclear fuel.
- While the land agreement has been terminated, Holtec reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ELEA in future federal initiatives, such as potential Department of Energy calls for consolidated spent fuel storage proposals.
Long-term safety at Armenian plant assessed

- The review focused on Unit 2, which resumed operation in 1995 and is licensed to run until 2026, with a request pending to extend its operation to 2036.
- The team praised improvements in ageing management, seismic safety, and modernization efforts, while offering recommendations to further enhance long-term operational safety.
