- France’s deep geological storage project is expected to cost between €26bn ($28.9bn) and €37.5bn, the national nuclear waste agency Andra said on 12 May, up from an earlier estimate of around €25bn.
- The project, called Cigéo, is planned to be France’s centralised facility for long-term storage of high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants and other reactor facilities.
New way to pull uranium from water can help China's nuclear power push
- Chinese researchers have developed an extremely energy efficient and low-cost technology for extracting uranium from seawater, a potential boon to the country’s nuclear power ambitions.
- When tested with small amounts of natural seawater – about 1 litre running through the system at any time – the new method was able to extract 100 per cent of uranium from East China Sea water and 85 per cent from South China Sea water. In the latter case, the researchers also achieved 100 per cent extraction with larger electrodes.
