OPG gets final permission to construct first North American SMR
- Ontario Power Generation GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy announced May 8 that Ontario authorities have approved construction plans for the first of four BWRX-300 small modular reactors at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site on Lake Ontario, less than 50 miles east of Toronto, Canada.
- The approval comes after OPG received a license to construct the first SMR unit from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in April and clears the way for construction to begin, with completion of the first unit scheduled by the end of the decade.
European Commission adds to Czech worries over nuclear power plant contract
- The European Commission has asked the Czech Republic to postpone signing a contract with South Korea's KHNP worth at least $18 billion to build new nuclear power blocks as it investigates the use of foreign subsidies, an EC spokesperson said on Monday.
- “We are raising concerns under the rules of the foreign subsidies regulation regarding the South Korean bidder,” the spokesperson said in a daily briefing shown online, adding there was no timeline for the probe. “We are not at the stage where we are opening an in-depth investigation, and I would not pre-judge if we are going there or not.”
세아베스틸, 한수원에 '사용후핵연료 운반 용기' 첫 공급
- 세아베스틸(427080)은 지난 2023년 한국수력원자력과 약 350억 원 규모로 공급 계약한 ‘사용후핵연료 운반 용기’의 초도 납품을 완료했다고 12일 밝혔다. 세아베스틸의 KN-18 사용후핵연료 운반 용기는 전남 영광에 있는 한빛원자력본부에 인도됐다.
- KN-18 사용후핵연료 운반 용기는 경수로형 원자로에서 발생한 사용후핵연료를 운반할 수 있는 제품이다. 지진과 외부 충격 등 극한 조건에서도 안전하게 운반하는 용도로 사용된다. 세아베스틸은 지난 2022년 국내 최초로 미국 원자력규제위원회(NRC)로부터 품질보증 프로그램 심사를 통과했다.
