INL’s role in advancing HALEU production
- Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is helping the U.S. Department of Energy meet near-term HALEU needs by recovering material from federal inventories and repurposing used nuclear fuel.
- INL is supplying small quantities of HALEU for research and converting EBR-II spent fuel into usable HALEU for advanced reactors.
- These efforts aim to bridge the gap until a commercial HALEU supply chain is fully established.
OPG secures government equity financing for SMR project
- Canada Growth Fund and Building Ontario Fund will invest a combined CAD3 billion in Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington New Nuclear Project, acquiring minority stakes to help de-risk the construction of four small modular reactors (SMRs).
- The first SMR is expected to be completed by 2030, with the remaining three by the mid-2030s, delivering up to 1,200 MW of clean energy.
- These investments aim to attract private and Indigenous capital and position Ontario as a global leader in advanced nuclear technology.
Regulatory milestone for Wyoming advanced reactor
- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has completed the Environmental Impact Statement for TerraPower’s Natrium reactor project in Wyoming and recommended issuing a construction permit for Kemmerer Unit 1.
- The Natrium reactor combines an 840 MWt sodium-cooled fast reactor with molten salt energy storage, enabling flexible output up to 500 MWe.
- This marks a major regulatory milestone for the first-of-its-kind advanced reactor, with final safety evaluation expected by the end of 2025.
