Nuclear Fuel Arrives At Palisades As Restart Edges Closer
- The Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan has received 68 new fuel assemblies as part of its restart process, marking the first time a permanently shut-down reactor in the U.S. is returning to service.
- Holtec International, which acquired the plant for decommissioning, reversed course and secured a $1.52 billion federal loan guarantee to repower it.
- Although not yet generating electricity, Palisades officially regained operational status in August 2024, allowing fuel delivery and final preparations for reactivation.
South Africa To Revive Abandoned Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Project, Increase Nuclear Capacity
- South Africa will revive its abandoned Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project as part of a $128 billion energy investment plan aiming to boost nuclear and gas to 16% of total capacity by 2042.
- The PBMR, originally developed from 1994 to 2009, was shelved due to lack of funding but will now be restarted to support energy security and industrial heat supply.
- The plan also targets reducing coal dependence and achieving net-zero electricity generation by 2050.

Netherlands aims to extend operation of Borssele plant
- The Netherlands plans to extend the operation of its Borssele nuclear power plant from 2033 to 2054 and build two new reactors by 2035, aiming to boost nuclear energy’s share in electricity production.
- To support this, the government will establish a state-owned company, NEO NL, with €45 million in funding to oversee construction and operation. Additionally, €20 million will be allocated to explore small modular reactors (SMRs), with collaboration underway with the UK to accelerate development.
