DOE announces NEPA exclusion for advanced reactors
- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a categorical exclusion from National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews for certain advanced nuclear reactor projects, streamlining authorization and construction.
- This change stems from Executive Order 14301 signed in May 2025, aiming to expedite environmental reviews for reactors with inherent safety and reduced risks.
- Exemptions will be granted case-by-case, ensuring projects meet strict safety and waste management standards.

- Uzbekistan plans to begin pouring the first concrete for its small modular reactor (SMR) project in the Jizzakh region well before December 2026, despite earlier speculation of delays.
- The plant will feature both two large VVER-1000 reactors (1 GW each) and two RITM-200N SMRs (55 MWe each), built in cooperation with Russia’s Rosatom.
- Once completed, the facility is expected to supply about 14% of Uzbekistan’s electricity demand.
